This unit was a study in how to teach new language. The unit covered teaching vocabulary and grammar structures, in the frame work of ESA lesson planning. When considering the difficulty of teaching new vocabulary, it is important to consider the appropriacy of the vocabular to the class, spelling and pronunciation, similarity to words they already know, and similarity to words in their language. When selecting vocabulary appropriacy to students and teaching objective is considered, as well as, how often the students would be likely to use the language and the vocabularies teachability. Students will need to know meaning, use, grammar, spelling and pronunciation. New grammar structures should be taught along with meaning, use, forms/patterns, and the differences (if any) between written and spoken form of the structure. Grammar structures may be more syllabus driven than vocabulary, but it is important to ensure no teaching points are missed (even if they are not covered in the text). In teaching both vocabulary and grammatical structures the ESA methodology can be applied in any appropriate manner. A teacher may choose straight arrow, boomerang or patchwork lesson plans.
