This unit contains an overview of different methods of evaluation, focusing on various test types and summarizing the major external tests that may be encountered. There are more than one way of evaluating and assessing an individual student?s language level, including tutorials (group or individual), self-evaluation by the students through questionnaires or discussion, and tests. Language tests may be divided into the categories of placement, diagnostic, progress, and practice tests. Placement or level tests are used to determine the appropriate class placement for entering students, and are often arranged progressively from easy to difficult. Diagnostic tests are more extensive than placement tests, and help the teacher determine and plan the scope of content for the future study and identify a student?s weaknesses and gaps of knowledge. Progress tests occur at regular intervals and are used to evaluate grasp of taught content; they typically should cover all four skills. Finally, practice tests are used as preparation for external tests, and should mirror the test being prepared for as closely as possible to ensure maximum benefit. External tests are divided into General English, Business English, and Academic English. General English tests include Cambridge (subdivided by difficulty into the KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE tests) and CELS, among others. Major Business English tests include TOEIC, used for employment by companies, Cambridge BEC including the Preliminary, Vantage and Higher levels, and BULAP, used in-company to demonstrate level. Of Academic English tests, TOEFL and IELTS are most prominent and are accepted by many or most universities. While most of the information contained in this unit was previously familiar to me, the overall look and review was of assistance and appreciated. The breakdown of the Cambridge test levels helped to clarify an area I was previously confused by, and I found the accompanying video lesson to be concise and helpful, as usual.
