Past simple is used for past actions with a given time, when time is asked about, and when an action clearly took place at a definite time, but that time is not mentioned. Generally, the word \"ago\" indicates that past simple is being used. Past continuous is used for interrupted past actions, to indicate gradual development in the past, to express an action, when began before that time and probably continued after it, and for descriptions. Almost always, some kind of time reference is required. Past perfect is the past equivalent of present perfect. It is used to represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past. That is, the past viewed from another past viewpoint or the \"past in the past.\" \"When\" and \"after\" are often used to show that a past action had completely finished before the another action in the past started. Past perfect continuous is not used frequently. It talks about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment we are talking about, and it does not matter whether or not it continued after that.
