This unit delved into teaching pronunciation through the lens of understanding phonology, specifically stress, rhythm and intonation. Within intonation, I learned about the rise/fall, fall/rise and flat intonation patterns to help with teaching of expression, such as happiness, sadness or disbelief. There were also several other techniques to teach intonation mentioned, which included gesturing, humming or singing, and the use of stress marks on a board. The desire is for students to sound as natural as possible with the English language, which is why it is important to be aware of several sound-joining techniques. Sound changing and linking are commonly heard when listening to different dialects of English. In further enhancing the teaching of pronunciation, the phonemic alphabet is a valuable tool to use because it can help students recognize a sound for a word that is pronounced different than similar looking words. The phonemic chart is divided among vowels, dipthongs, and consonants (organized by sounds made from the from of the mouth to the back of the mouth). Finally, this unit categorizes sounds by manner and place of articulation. This helps students analyze the difference between which sounds originate from different parts of the mouth, ranging from the bilabial (top and bottom lips come together) to the glottal (from the throat).
