Unit 14 overviewed the advantages and disadvantages of course books and lesson materials. Authentic materials are anything that a native speaker would hear or read including programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, menus, etc. Students usually gain confidence when they understand these authentic materials, which in return would motivate students. Created materials are designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Some activities include crosswords, word searches, role-play cards, gapfill activities, and picture stories. There are many advantages and disadvantages to using a course book. The course book is usually easier and less time consuming than using created materials, provides a mixed balanced of grammar, vocab, and skills work, and materials have usually been tested Before publication. Some disadvantages are that the book does not always fit the specific needs and interests of the students, the book can become predictable and boring, it can make teachers lazy and less creative, and also the course book dictates what is to be taught.
