Both authentic and created materials have their advantages and disadvantages. Authentic materials are interesting to students and help build confidence in practical situations. Like authentic materials, created materials can be modified to meet specific goals or student interests. Obviously, created materials have more flexibility in meeting these kinds of goals. Using a course book with a class saves the teacher time in planning materials and helps to keep the class on track with a syllabus. On the other hand, a course book can be limiting so the teacher needs to modify the materials provided to suit the class needs. In particular, course books may fail to meet the needs specific to the studentsÂ’ diverse skills and nationalities. In order to make course books most effective, teachers should omit, replace, supplement and adapt any materials to meet their studentsÂ’ needs.
