The role of the teacher in the classroom plays a big part in creating a positive, engaging learning environment and establishing rapport with the students. Part of the role of a teacher is their approach and attitude towards teaching; qualities that play into successful teaching. A good teacher is someone who really cares about their teaching, but furthermore, someone who cares about the learning of their students. Amongst the many qualities that make up a good teacher, there are some essential ones. A good teacher is kind and patient. Patience is a key quality because every student has a different pace of learning and it is important to be patient and have a kind attitude towards students who struggle or do not understand lessons. A good teacher is able to motivate learners. When a teacher is able to motivate learning and instill a love for learning new things, this encourages students to excel in their knowledge. A good teacher is able to correct students without offending them or their motivation to continue learning. This is important because as a teacher you want to respectfully correct or re-direct students when they are doing something wrong but in a way where their motivation and self-esteem is not degraded. It is all about your approach. A good teacher is observant and knowledgeable of students' weaknesses and is able to give help and individual attention where necessary. This allows a teacher to be ready to affirm students in what they are doing well, and encourage students when they are struggling. A good teacher is someone who loves to teach and is passionate about the learning/education environment. The qualities that make up a good teacher most definitely play into the role of a teacher and their ability to establish rapport in the classroom. The teacher plays many roles in the classroom. There are few important ones that should be highlighted. The teacher is an ‘Organizer’ in the classroom. This is when a teacher is responsible for fluidity of activities in the classroom. It is the ability of the teacher to organize students in activities by giving instructions, managing the activity, bringing it to a close, and organizing feedback to students. Being organized in the classroom is very important because it provides students with direction for the tasks they are supposed to do and it helps there not to be chaos in the classroom. The teacher is a ‘Assessor’. This is the role of giving feedback and correction to students as well as evaluating and grading their work. This is important because it allows students to know what they need to work on more as well as see the progress that they are making. In this role, it is important for a teacher to be sensitive and kind to the students' reactions. The teacher is a ‘tutor’. This consists of individual help and guidance to students who need the support and encouragement in their studies. This is important because some students will need more help than others, and a teacher should be aware of who those students. At the same time, a teacher needs to give equal attention to all students. It is important for the teacher to be an ‘Observer or Monitor’ in the classroom. This helps a teacher know how long activities take and the success of them. A teacher also observes how the students are doing in their studies, making notes on what they are doing well and where there is room for improvement. It is important to know your students' progress so that you can target you lessons towards what they need help on. Finally, one of the most important roles that the teachers play is a ‘Model’. In the classroom, the students will look up to the teacher as the model for learning english. It is important for a teacher to take this role and responsibility seriously so that they can represent a good model for students to learn english from and benefit from the speech and pronunciation of the teacher. The teacher undoubtedly plays many roles in the classroom and having the qualities of a good teacher enhances the effectiveness of the teacher. The teacher is a key player in the process of learning.
