There was a lot to learn in this lesson about the history of language teaching and how we have progressed from the grammar-translation methods used in the 17th century to the modern ESA approach. I remember taking a french course in college back in the early 1980s and doing lots of drills and studying with no engagement or activation stages. I have a so-so vocabulary and so-so pronunciation skills and some knowledge of grammar, but I cannot communicate beyond a basic level. As educational research has become more brain-based, the science of language acquisition has progressed, and I can see how the ESA approach has elements of the Gradual Release of Responsibility model of teaching in with students taking on greater responsibility for their own learning as a lesson develops. I can see how the ESA approach and its variations (boomerang and patchwork models) could be used outside a language acquisition class, because it is just sound teaching methodology. Very few learners would not enjoy elements of socialization, play, and being able to immediately apply what they have just studied. I also appreciated learning about correction and feedback. Both of these are important to me as a teacher and as a student. I like having a student self-correct or having fellow students help out with a correction in a kind, helpful way.
