This unit is about English grammar and looks at modal verbs, phrasal verbs, the passive voice and relative clauses. I have learned about the usage of all modal auxiliary verbs. They are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb and are also used to express the degree of formality. I have also learned about relative clauses, the passive voice and the passive formation. In the passive, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb and the tense is always indicated by the auxiliary verb 'be'. A relative clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun and gives further information about a noun. There are defining and non-defining relative clauses. The information given in a defining relative clause is essential to the meaning of the sentence and the information given in a non-defining relative clause is not essential to the meaning of the sentence.
