This unit covered two of the four basic skills of any language. The first two are \"receptive skills\": reading and listening. The second two (which this unit dealt with) are \"productive skills\": speaking and writing. These are all equal in importance, and all should be included in a balanced way in each lesson. Doing so creates an \"integrated\" skills lesson. Accuracy activities are concentrated on producing correct language, while fluency activities (usually in the activate phase) allow students to be more creative with the language. They are equally important. Writing has some key differences from speaking, not only in grammar, but vocabulary. Spelling, layout, and punctuation are also specifically important elements to writing. Even with these differences, there are factors of a speaking lesson which are also common to a writing lesson, which should be included. Creative writing should be encouraged, as it engages students and gives them a sense of pride. Games are popular with adults and children alike, and are very effective for encouraging communication while students have fun. They provide useful controlled practice and thus should be included as an integral part of the syllabus.
