Jeremy Harmer's ESA methodology of teaching English is both efficient and effective in providing students with lessons that will be interesting, lively and most importantly, knowledge-filled. Students are able to readily accept new ideas through well constructed and meaningful games and activities that are designed to bring the most out of a student-centered approach to learning. The Engage portion of the class, designed to get students to begin their class thinking about topics in English, allows for a smooth transition into the study stages of the class without the students feeling they are being forced into a learning situation (which may seem boring to them). The study portion allows teachers to effectively convey the lesson through meaningful structures while maintaining the fun-filled nature of the class. The study stage also ensures a natural progression for the students into the activate stages where they should be more than capable of dealing with future activate stages armed with the appropriate knowledge. The activate portion provides the students with an opportunity to practice what they have learned in a controlled environment. This methodology places high importance in the fact that good learning comes from student-centered classes and as such certain techniques like elicitation and gentle corrective procedures are vital to producing a successful class and ensuring the students achieve their goals for each lesson. Feedback is also one of the pillars of success to this model as corrective measures based off of the feedback received from students should be handled with care and not enforced with detriment to the students' confidence and ability. As such a student-centered approach is also employed first, either through self-correction or peer correction, only using teacher correction as a last resort. A students comfort and confidence are essential to his/her learning procedure and should be handled with care. This ESA model handles these essentials well and therefore provides the backbone for successful lessons.
