This unit covered Receptive Skills, which are broken down into Reading and Listening. It began by listing the reasons why people read or listen to something, which are either for a purpose or for pleasure, and by the end of the unit, it showed how these two purposes can be enacted in a patchwork lesson that will get the students, reading, talking, and listening to each other, thereby enhancing their knowledge of English in pairs and as a class. The unit broke down the skills everyone uses when reading and/or listening to material. These skills are predicting the content of something from its title or headline, scanning for specific information, skimming for the general idea of the text, looking for detailed info, and deducing the meaning of words from the context of the given material. Each of these five skills are used everyday by people, and making sure to teach each one properly and appropriately will lead to the students' better understanding and more natural comprehension/use of the language in daily life. The unit then broke down how to go about teaching receptive skills in relation to new vocabulary and/or concepts by pointing out important aspects of a lesson plan. Pre-teaching vocabulary and choosing topics that would be of interest to students were just two ways in which the teacher fosters comprehension and motivation in students and engages students in the lesson by making the work interesting rather than rigorous. Finally, this unit gave an example of a patchwork ESA lesson, using Elvis Presley's work and biography as a topic that would be interesting to students and open them to the use of both receptive skills. This was very helpful because it separated each phase and gave a hypothetical of the work that would be done, inferring the skills that would be taught, and it provided a lesson plan example that moved naturally and engagingly so that, as the reader, I could see how this type of lesson plan would build on vocabulary and skills (both receptive and special) to enhance the students' reading and listening comprehension.
