Effective teaching consists, partially, in the methodologies employed. There are diverse opinions as to the most effective way to teach. The grammar- translation style, a standard model, engages students to learn language by finding equivalents within their own language. This method has the advantage of allowing for students to make connections, but could prevent students from naturally learning a new language, instead teaching them more about their own native language. Where as the task based methodology puts more focus on the task given by the teacher rather than the language itself. In truth all of the given methods offer their own advantages and disadvantages and it is the role of the teacher to take into account what will work best for their class, given the cultural and abilities of the students. The ESA Model offers a useful template on how to structure a class. In the engage section a teacher can use music, games, etc. to create interest in the lesson. During this period the teacher does not teach anything new, it is supposed to be a warmer section of the class. The study section is the main portion where students focus on the language and how it is structured. This begins normally with the teacher gathering information from the students so that they can make the proper decision on what needs to be taught. After these language points have been discussed a game or activity can be implemented. The activate portion is an opportunity for the students to freely practice these points, while the teacher focuses on the fluency rather than accuracy of language use. There are numerous ways to use the ESA structure allowing for creative freedom for the teacher. It can be as simple as an E-S-A form to the highly complicated patchwork form which can be as complicated as E-A-A-SA-E-S-A. The method of giving feedback is also an important part of teaching. One must take into account several variables. Such as the students abilities, culture, lesson and the type of activity. Important as well in this is the difference between mistake and an error.
