Unit 14 provides information on the use and analysis of course materials for TEFL lessons. Course materials can first be divided into authentic and creative (or non-authentic). Authentic materials are any materials utilized for teaching which have not been artificially prepared for students. Things such as magazine or newspaper articles, television shows or advertisements, films, poems, short stories, passages from literature, brochures, music and so on. Authentic provide students with real and relevant examples of English language and therefore are often more interesting to study. They also encourage a greater level of confidence in students when they are able to accurately and fluently access them. Created, or non-authentic, materials are any materials prepared by the instructor specifically for the classroom environment. They have the benefit of being catered to a certain grade level, and an effective and attentive teacher can further cater them to the interests of his or her students unlike materials from a coursebook. Coursebook materials are those constructed by teachers, universities, or other institutions with the sole purpose of being used to aid in classroom instruction. The types of materials may vary, but frequent include a student edition text to be used primarily in class and for reading, a workbook to be used for homework, audio materials to provide additional practice, a teacher's edition of the text with added information to aid instructors and sometimes the inclusion of supplementary authentic graded reading materials. The choice to use a coursebook over fully preparing a lesson plan from scratch has both positives and negatives. It is important to consider these factors when choosing which coursebook to use (if the choice is available) and how much to supplement and omit materials from its syllabus throughout a course as needed. Inexperienced instructors may be tempted to fully adhere to a coursebooks schedule, however, some amount of creativity and divergence will likely be needed to teach most effectively as well as to keep students motivated and interested.
