I have learned the many intricacies of present tenses in the English language. This chapter was a very informative chapter as it gave the various reasons why we use various present tenses. Of course as a natvie speaker I was not aware of the reasons why I use various present tenses. I would only use tenses from habit. Learning all of these forms and the reasons why we use these forms make me more aware of how much of a challenge teaching a new language can be because there are so many intricacies as to why one form is used and not another, for example when using the present perfect form there is a difference when using a sentence with 'for' versus 'since' when indicating a time span versus a point in time. Also there are specific reasons why we use the present perfect form versus the present perfect continuous form. I can image how difficult those two forms could be for a student to distinguish with the major difference between the two forms being that the present perfect form emphasizes an activity that is completed in the past without a definite time reference and the present perfect continuous emphasizing a past action that has happened but is continuing in the present with an emphasis on the activity continuing.
