This unit provided an overview of several parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, gerunds, conjunctions, and prepositions. It also went into detail of several different \"sub-types\" of these parts of speech (e.g., reflexive pronouns, auxiliary verbs, or superlative adjectives). This was a great reminder of some of the aspects of the English language that I take for granted, despite having studied them fairly extensively in secondary school. I spent a fair amount of time in this lesson trying to consider how I would try to relate these concepts to an ESL learner; perhaps the most difficult part of that is the number of exceptions the English language has that simply must be memorized through use and repetition. That in particular helps reinforce the previous unit's message that a teacher must utilize multiple roles. If, for example, a teacher simply managed a classroom and lectured on grammar topics exclusively, students would have a very difficult time getting accustomed to abstract concepts like articles or the use of irregular verbs in speech.
