I've learned that there are far more aspects to grammar than I ever remember learning in grade school :) I've been given a wonderful variety of useful resources that I can continue coming back to even once I've started teaching. I've learned the value of background knowledge and getting to know individuals. Though it will be hard work, the students will definitely benefit more from my preparation. It's not about taking it easy on myself, it's about teaching english the best way I know how. I've learned skills for classroom management, how to work with different types of individuals--including ages, levels of english, nationalities, personalities, and motivation levels. I have learned how to properly plan an ESL lesson and have been given enough practice that-though I will be nervous-I can feel a little more comfortable beginning a job. I've become familiar with the various tools a teacher can use in the classroom and the varying values of each. Though I will definitely need to constantly review, I've been given a crash course in grammar and parts of speech necessary to teaching english as well as the four basic skills that I will do my best to include in lessons and assessments. I have personally gained a great sense of achievement in getting to this final lesson. There were many times I would look at a worksheet and cringe at the tasks, wondering if I would have the knowledge to complete them and whether or not the course was worth finishing. However, I feel blessed to have been able to make it all the way through, my confidence growing with each grammar lesson passed and lesson plan completed. The course forced my creativity and professional knowledge to grow and be applied, which makes the completion of it a great accomplishment. What I can take to the field with me is very valuable. I can use the methods, games, and resources from this course in my new job. I can apply correct teaching, planning, and assessing procedures to my every day work. I will make sure each day includes an Engage, Study, and Activate portion, even if the times of each vary or are broken up into boomerang or patchwork lessons. I can take with me the knowledge that though I plan what I think is best, I need to keep an open mind, be flexible, and willing to learn from my students in the same way they learn from me. Once I have a job placement, it will be easier to narrow down the specific resources I may need or the concepts I will need to review. My job will be to make learning english something that my students will look forward to, and with the great game and study ideas I believe that's something I can do. Overall, I feel I've been given an amazing start for my next adventure, and hope to keep coming back to the information I've learned from this course.
